The 5th Global Road Safety Week Event.
The press conference will be attended by members of Parliament, the representatives of the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health, City Hall officials, the diplomatic corps, the World Health Organization office of Georgia, LEPL Georgian Insurance Supervision Service, NGO "Georgia's Alliance's Safe Roads" and other civil society organizations.
The main topic of the Week is ‘Leadership for Road Safety’ is the ability to influence or inspire people to achieve a certain goal. Stronger leadership for road safety is needed at national and local levels to attain road safety targets. The most effective leaders, who hail from all sectors of society, are those who #SpeakUp for road safety and take action. It’s important to recognize that all of us, as individuals, can be leaders for road safety!
The road traffic injuries are a major public health problem and the eighth leading cause of death globally. Every year, more than 1.35 million people die and another 50 million are disabled on the world's roads. Road traffic injury is now the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5–29 years. Traffic accidents and road injuries are a devastating burden for Georgia. Annually, more than 500 people are killed and about 9,000 are injured, which is twice as much as the European average.
Georgia has also joined together with other member states of the international community to mark the Week. On May 6 at 11:00, the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC) will be hosting the opening of the 5th Global Road Safety Week Event.
