Food Safety- Everyone’s Business

On 7 June 2019, the world will celebrate the first ever World Food Safety Day, an international observance proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on 20 December 2018. The theme of this year’s inaugural World Food Safety Day invites us to recognize, food safety is everyone’s business. World Health Organization, together with UN and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) encourages the countries to join and continue the celebration of the day in future years.

Access to safe and adequate food plays a key role to the human health and wellbeing. Food borne diseases interrupt socio-economic development of the countries and damage health care system, economies, tourism and trade.

An estimated 600 million cases (one in every 10) of foodborne illnesses are observed in the world annually, and almost 40% of them are children under 5 years old (125 000 deaths  every year). 

Safe food is critical to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is based on mutual responsibility of governments, producers and consumers. Thus, everyone - from food production to consumers play a major role in Food safety and security play a major role in 

With celebration of this day, world Health Organization highlights the importance of food safety and promotes efforts to reduce the burden of food borne diseases.
