title

Project Title: “NCDC Regional Integration: Kafkas University Partnering for Molecular Epidemiology of B. anthracis and Brucella species in Turkey“; TAP 10; 712012;DTRA;  Kars University; Project duration:  21.10.2014- 21.10.2015

 Project summary

a). goal: This project is designed to leverage the scientific expertise and capabilities vested in the NCDC Lugar Center to address an international public health issue, provide training in molecular biology techniques to Turkish researchers at Kafkas University, improve the understanding of the molecular epidemiology of bacterial zoonotic pathogens which threaten the health of Georgian and Turkish citizens, and establish an active collaboration between Georgian and Turkish researchers that will provide a foundation for future joint research efforts.

b). Project implementation plan:Project will use the strains of repository of Kars University. DNA extraction will be done in Turkey at Kars University, after extraction will be done sterility test to proof sample sterility and samples will be sent to Georgia, at National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health – Lugar Centre. In parallel of samples testing at Lugar Centre will be done two training sessions (in April and May) for our Turkish colleagues from Kars University.

c). Expected results: Will be performed molecular characterization of 30 strains of BA and 30 strains of Brucella. The successful implementation of this project will: Leverage the scientific expertise and capabilities vested in NCDC-Lugar Center to address an international public health issue. Contribute to improved understanding of the molecular epidemiology of bacterial pathogens which threaten the health of Georgian and Turkish citizens, will facilitate an active collaboration between Georgian and Turkish researchers that will seed future joint research efforts and engage regional comments.
