Project Overview

  1. Purpose: To evaluate rotavirus infection burden among diarrheal diseases and baseline prevalence before introducing rotavirus vaccine in order to determine the effect of vaccination among children of age group 0-5.

b) Ways of implementation:

  • Selection and training of the staff responsible Children’s infectious disease clinic in Tbilisi which was chosen by expert group;

  • Provision of laboratory NCDC Lugar center by equipment and other resources required for the project implementation by European office of WHO;

  • Based on the case definition, inclusion of hospitalized children with acute diarrhea under age of 5 into the surveillance system;

  • Implementing all the procedures to according WHO protocol;

  • Data management and reporting;

  • Genotyping of selected samples and external quality control in referral laboratory.

c) Expected results:

  • Determining baseline value of rotavirus infection before introduction of rotavirus vaccine among age group of 0-5;

  • Determining the most prevalent genotype of rotavirus;

  • Determination of vaccination effect.
