Project Title: “Evaluation of the Polio / AFP surveillance system” WHO; Project duration: 28.04.2014 – 02.05.2014.

 Project summary 

a). Project objectives: Evaluation of the polio / AFP surveillance system in the country - whether the country is sufficiently sensitive for timely revealing of the circulation of the poliovirus; development of recommendations for ensuring and maintaining the functioning of polio / AFP surveillance system on a high level in all administrative levels throughout the country.

b) Project Implementation: According to the recommendations of the WHO, 5 regions shall be selected based on the following criteria: low and high level of revealing of the AFP, mostly population living in the city or in the villages, ethnic groups/religious minorities, territories that are hard to reach geographically. Surveillance meetings are planned in Tbilisi, Kakheti region (Telavi, Sagarejo, Lagodekhi); Samtskhe-Javakheti region (Akhaltsikhe, Akhalkalaki, Borjomi); Kvemo Kartli region (Marneuli, Gardabani, Rustavi); Autonomous Republic of Adjaria (Batumi, Kobuleti); in each of the administrative units, the visits shall be conducted in the Public Health Centers and target stationaries of the Disease Surveillance System. The evaluation of the functioning of the system will be conducted based on the special questionnaire developed by the WHO. The research participants will include 5 specialists from NCDC and 6 WHO consultants, which shall form 5 working groups.

c) Expected results: the experts of the World Health Organization will present the identification of the problem in the system of AFP, planning of actions and elaboration of the recommendations
